World Fair

 

world All students in the class are responsible for researching, writing a report, creating a presentation, and delivering that presentation to the class on a nation of their choice. Each student may choose whichever country they wish to report on, but no two students in the class can report on the same country. Students should choose a country that is interesting to them as students will work on the World Fair Project in multiple classes during the first semester.

REQUIREMENTS

          Written Paper

             I.      Title Page – Include the name of the country, your name, and graphic all y design the background of the title page.

          II.      Table of Contents – List all of the chapters along with the beginning page number of that chapter.

       III.      History – Students will report on the history of the country in this chapter. Students will report on the entire history of the country or if the history of the country is extensive they may report on a specific era with the teacher’s approval.

        IV.      Geography – Students will report on the geography of their country in the second chapter. Students must include but are not limited to the following: location, topography, natural resources, urban areas,  rural regions and population statistics.

           V.      Government – Students will report on the government in their country and must include federal and local (city) government.

a.      Students must also answer an essential question à What is the most important crisis facing the country today and what can you do to help resolve the crisis? Be sure to take a stance on the issue. (The crisis could be related to cultural issues, religious issues, humanitarian issues, political issues, and foreign issues).

b.     The student with the best solution that is most appropriate will be put into action by all freshmen during the second semester.

        VI.      Language – Students will report on the language(s) of their country, both oral and written when possible. Students must give some examples of words and/or phrases commonly used in the country.

     VII.      Art /Music/Dance/Food – Students will report on all or focus on two of the topics native to their country. Students also have the opportunity to create some type of native art or music and present it as part of this chapter.

  VIII.      Religion Students will report on the main religion(s) of their nation. Include facts about the religion(s) as well as the historical influence it has had on the country.

        IX.      Culture and Daily Way of Life – Students will report on the culture of the people in their country as well as information on the daily way of life of the people. This could include holidays, festivals, celebrations, values, education, housing, and daily routines.

           X.      Additional Chapter – This is a mandatory chapter where the student will report on any extra topic that they found interesting. In the past some students have reported on sports, pop culture, famous people, recreations, and famous landmarks. Students may choose any of the listed topics or create their own.

        XI.      Letters – Students will write a letter to the Head of State or the ambassador to or from their country requesting information on the country, a flag of the country for La S all e to hang as part of the World Fair, and any additional information applicable. This should be one of the first items to be completed to all ow ample response time.

     XII.      Cite Works Page – Students must use no less than two books (one from the LaS all e Library and one from the public library), one magazine article, one reference book, one database, and multiple Internet sources which must include an evaluation sheet for each site.

 

 

Additional Information for Written Report

  • All chapters in the final report must be in order as they are listed above.
  • Pictures and maps must be inserted into the text of each of the chapters with citations.
    • There is no limit on the numbers of pictures, but students should not over do it.
  • Students will submit their final paper to “Turn it in” to guard against plagiarism.
  • The final written project (book) should be a 25 – 35 pages and be spiral bound with a cover.
    • Kinko’s and Office Depot… will spiral bind your book for a sm all fee. 

         

Oral Presentation

             I.      Each student will be expected to give an oral presentation on their country. The presentation should last between 12 and 15 minutes. Note cards may be used if desired, but students may not read their presentation from note cards or the PowerPoint. Students must teach their country relying on their memory with limited assistance from note cards.

          II.      Students can include any chapters from the paper but must include the Essential Question and the response to the question.

       III.      Some form of native art, dance, or music must be presented during the presentation.

        IV.      Food and/or drink native to the country may be presented and will be counted as extra credit. Students should bring enough for the class to sample.

           V.      Traditional dress from your country will be counted as extra credit.

   

 

Visual Presentation

             I.      Students must prepare a PowerPoint presentation to facilitate the oral presentation. It should not be used to give notes to the class; rather it should only include vital information and pictures graphs, charts, political cartoons etc…

a.      Students should have no less than 15 slides in the PowerPoint.

b.     Video and appropriate sound may be added to the PowerPoint.

          II.      Students must also have some artifacts which could include books, art, pictures, clothing, or anything appropriate that will help facilitate the presentation.

         

  The World Fair will be worth a total of 450 points

  • 250 points for the paper
  • 100 points for the oral presentation
  • 100 points for the visual presentation

   

   

  General Additional Information

 

  • Students will work on the World Fair in multiple classes including World Cultures, English , and Computers .
  • Students will have time during World Cultures class to go to the library to work on their project, but the majority of the project will have to be completed at home.
  • Student must obtain a Public Library card in order to check out a book or use their databases from the Public Library.
  • Students will draw numbers from a hat to determine the order of the presentations. All papers will be due on the same day.

 

 

The World Fair Conclusion

 

  • All freshmen will attend an assembly during school to honor the conclusion of the World Fair. A special guest speaker will appear to give a presentation on global issues. Once the guest speaker has concluded, the students judged to be the top two in the World Fair will give their presentation to the entire freshmen class if they are willing. If the top four are not willing then the next in line will be asked to give their presentation. 
  • Parents, administrators, and media will be invited to the World Fair.
  • Those papers judged to be the best in each class will be on display.
  • Those students with the best food, artifacts, art creation, and music samples will also be on display.
  • The flags of the country’s that were obtained through the letter writing will be on display.
  • The top four students with the best answers to the essential question will also present their solutions to the audience.
